Dr. Chia has a very beautiful countertenor voice that he uses with great effect in all genres of music, whether classical or popular. His use of text, his vocal colorations, his flexibility, and his vocal range are all first-rate. He is a superior musician. Dr. Wee Kiat Chia has taught me a tremendous amount in the short time we've worked together. He is an impeccable technician and pedagogue, who, through evoking various affekts and imagery, translates elusive concepts into tangible and effective exercises. Dr. Chia's ability to demonstrate the various vocal approaches and stylistic elements/choices never ceases to amaze me -- in my years of voice lessons, I have never encountered a teacher who was able to demonstrate exactly what I was doing wrong with such precision and ease. In turn, the side-by-side demos not only helped me grasp the abstract concepts but also fast tracked the process of training my ear to hear the subtleties, allowing me to practice effectively on my own. Artistically, Dr. Chia excels at articulating and pinpointing the details that elevates the particular styles we work on, bridging the aesthetic intuitions with actionable suggestions. Looking back, it is unsurprising that when we worked on a Chinese art song, I learned so much about my native tongue as well as the genre. I highly recommend Dr. Chia! |
